MAGAZINE ARCHIVE : KERRANG – 14.7.2001

This week, we go back to the summer of 2001, and Stereophonics are the cover stars of Kerrang, as they get ready to perform at Donnington.

You may see a sticker that says the magazine cost £2.50, I actually got it for £1 on discount.

In news, Blink 182 are embarking on a Kerrang sponsored UK tour, well, gigs in Glasgow, Manchester and London, and Gwen Stefani has gone hip-Hop, promoting a single with Eve.

Meanwhile, the surviving members of Nirvana are in a dispute with Courtney Love over the proposed release of unreleased Nirvana material. This story gets a double page feature with Kerrang even invite Nirvana fans to voice their opinion.

Anyone is predicted for great things. If you’re trying to keep up, that’s a band called Anyone.

It’s all about tours in this edition, as Kerrang goes on one massive tour with Rancid, Pennywise, AFI, New Found Glory, Alien Ant Farm and The Ataris, and joins Medadeth for their first ever concert in Poland.

Cover stars Stereophonics get eight pages, profiling their ten year journey from formation to performing at Donnington, a journey which Kerrang says had several mistakes, countless arguments and one near riot.

In concert reviews, Kerrang went to see Weezer, supported by Jimmy Eat World, whose album gets reviewed.

If books are you thing, a biography of Motley Crue by Neil Strauss get five stars.

Unsurprisingly, cover stars Stereophonics upcoming gigs at Donnington Racetrack and Millennium Stadium in Cardiff are named as gig of the week.

The magazine ends with an advert for the following edition of Kerrang, which has a free CD and meets Rancid.

Travis Barker from Blink 182 is another year closer to 40.

Incidentally, he shares a birthday with Faye from Steps, who, from next week, can be seen doing Panto in Belfast.

Anni-Frid from Superswedes (Actually, only three of them were Swedish, Anni-Frid is actually Norwegian) Abba (or Frida, as she’s more commonly known) turned 68 this week. ABBArasure anyone?

Mani from the Roses turned 52 this week.

And a Girls Aloud double birthday as both Sarah (17th November) and Kimberley (today) turn 33.

50 YEARS OF TOP OF THE POPS : MAR 14 – MAR 20

We kick off this week is IKEA Brand Ambassador Jona Lewie. Often thought of as a One Hit Wonder, he is actually a Two Hit Wonder.

If you’re wondering where he is these days, well, you can always find him in the kitchen at parties.

Remember Hanson? One of them turns 31 this week. I can’t remember which one thought. On the topic of Hanson “Where’s The Love?” is probably their best song.

Mark Hoppus of Blink 182 is 42 this week. I’m not really a massive fan (though ironically, I do like some stuff by Angels and Airwaves, The Transplants, and Boxcar Racer) but “I Miss You” is a brilliant song.

Also celebrating a birthday this week is William, or Will.I.Am, which bizarrely is the website code for Armenia. I wonder if there is an Armenian pop star called Will.I.Com?

Gregory’s Girl and Queen Of VH1 in the 90s, Clare Grogan is 52 this week. I bet it must be hell being invited to her birthday party and trying not to sing this.

Of course, it was St Paddy’s Day this week, and no doubt you’ll be expecting something along that theme. Well, believe it or not, there are two Irish pop birthdays that day. Caroline Corr …..

…… and Stephen Gately, who would have been 38 this week.

And also born on St Patrick’s Day (but he’s not Irish) was Justin Hawkins of The Darkness.

A death anniversary now, and it’s 17 years since Jermaine Stewart died.
